Chamberlain junior shortstop Samantha Holle has committed to Florida, while sophomore infielder/outfielder Stephanie Medina has committed to South Florida, Chiefs softball coach Bob Diez said Thursday.
Holle finished her sophomore season with a .413 batting average, 29 runs, 33 hits, 28 RBI's and three home runs. She also recorded a .713 slugging percentage.
As a freshman, Medina recorded a .409 batting average with 12 runs, 18 hits and 15 RBI's.
"It takes a lot of pressure off them," Diez said. "They can just focus on softball."
Chiefs junior infielder Marissa Menendez already has committed to USF. Menendez was a Tribune All-Hillsborough County second-team selection as a sophomore.
CHARLES TO PLANT: Riverview principal Bob Heilmann confirmed to The Tampa Tribune that former Sharks tight end Orson Charles has enrolled at Plant High School.
Heilmann said Charles did not receive special assignment, but was not certain how he was able to enroll. Riverview coach Dan O'Regan confirmed that Charles withdrew from Riverview on Tuesday.
Charles had 16 receptions for 398 yards and three scores this past season for the run-oriented Sharks.
FOOTBALL RECRUITING: Cambridge Christian seniors Taylor Cabral and Erik Shears are joining the fun of the recruiting process; both players have set their first visits, Lancers coach Rick Shears said Thursday.
Cabral, Hillsborough County's leading rusher during the regular season, will take an official visit this weekend to Iona College, a Football Championships Subdivision (formerly I-AA) program in New York. The following weekend Cabral, a Tribune All-Hillsborough County second-team selection and a Class 1B second-team all-state selection, will make an official visit to Campbell University, another FCS program in North Carolina.
Shears, a Class 1B first-team all-state pick, will make an official visit to Hiram College, a Division III school in Ohio, the weekend before National Signing Day (Feb. 6).
By the end of the week, Alonso junior defensive lineman Demonte McAllister may have an offer from every SEC school.
Florida already is on board. South Carolina jumped on Wednesday. Auburn's Tommy Tuberville and Tennessee's Phil Fulmer are scheduled to stop by Friday.
"There's people coming in every day," Alonso coach Mike Heldt said.
Heldt expects USF's Jim Leavitt to visit next week, when he expects McAllister to rack up another offer.
Other Alonso players are equally busy. Senior defensive lineman Jamal Crook, who visited Murray State last week, will be at Tennessee State this weekend and Georgia Southern the following weekend. Senior defensive back Dion Price is visiting South Dakota this weekend.
2008 FOOTBALL SCHEDULES: Hillsborough County public school football teams in 2008 will face the same regular-season opponents they faced in 2007 and will face them in the same week as 2007, county assistant director of athletics Jennifer Burchill said Thursday. The only difference will be home and away games will be flopped.
For example, that means Armwood and Plant will once again square off in the 2008 season opener, only this time the game will be at Dad's Stadium in South Tampa rather than at Lyle Flagg Stadium in Seffner.
The same schedules do not necessarily apply to Tampa Catholic, Cambridge Christian, Berkeley Prep and Jesuit, which are private schools. However, Jesuit and Tampa Catholic will follow suit against their 2007 county public school opponents because each school signed a two-year scheduling contract with the county, Burchill said.
The only thing that could influence the schedule is if the regular season is shortened for any reason, Burchill said. Burchill pointed to the situation that arose last year when the State Legislature considered changing school starting dates. If the starting dates were changed this year, it almost certainly would impact the current schedule and a new one would have to be compiled, Burchill said.
PASCO VISITS: Mitchell quarterback Tate Humphrey will make a visit to Webber International University today. This will be the first visit for Humphrey, an honorable mention on the Class 5A All-State team, after he recently received his successful ACT score and scored high enough on the SAT to get looks from additional schools besides junior colleges.
Humphrey, who completed 93 of 154 passes for 1,401 yards and 13 touchdowns and also rushed for 751 yards and 14 scores, has also received calls from the University of Central Florida and Monmouth College.
Also making the trip to Babson Park with Humphrey is receiver Tyrone Hendrix, who led the Mustangs with 33 catches for 625 yards and 8 TDs. Other Mitchell players getting attention are second-leading receiver Jesse Dustin and linebacker Niko Hall (55 tackles), who visited Webber on Wednesday. Hendrix and Dustin have been offered scholarships to the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico.
