ZEPHYRHILLS - "Elastic Waistbands," a one-act play written by Temple Terrace playwright Carol Cohen, will be performed tonight, Saturday and Sunday in Clubhouse 2 at Betmar Acres.
Cohen, who has written four plays and works full time as an education marketing coordinator at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, plans to attend tonight's show with her mother, Yolanda Hemans, on whom the play is partially based.
"Miss Lillian's Supper," another of Cohen's works, was previously performed by the Carrollwood Players.
Cohen said "Elastic Waistbands" is loosely based on conversations and arguments she heard her parents have through the years. Although she said she is happy that her mother will see the play, she hopes it isn't too emotional.
"I love to see what different groups of people do with my work," she said. "It's very interesting because every director and actor puts their own imprint on it. Lines I didn't think were funny when I wrote them are funny when delivered."
Other productions that will be performed at Betmar Acres tonight, Saturday and Sunday are "Folly on the Trolley" and "The Letter."
"Elastic Waistbands" is expected to last about 30 minutes. It stars June Rainwater as Lorene, Denny Lee as her husband, Herb, and Ellen Ackerman as daughter Annie, according to information provided by director Betsy Jones Hayba.
Betmar Acres is a 55-and-older community off State Road 54.
The shows are expected to start at 7 p.m. tonight, 2 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday. A $5 donation is requested. Dessert will be served to those who reserve seats. For information, call Judy Whitkopf at (813) 779-0130.
