NEW PORT RICHEY - The Gulf Middle School Web page was shut down today after a link to what the principal referred to as an inappropriate Internet site appeared.
"We found someone had crashed our Web site," Principal Stan Trapp said.
That happened just a few days after it was discovered that students who went to the school resource officer's MySpace page could link to a Web site with nude pictures.
Trapp said it's possible one person is responsible for both situations.
"I think anybody who has heard the two stories would think there is a suspicious link between the two incidents," Trapp said.
Trapp said it could be that whoever created the link with the officer's MySpace account became encouraged by media coverage and decided to hack the school's site.
"I hope we are able to find out who that person is and prosecute them," Trapp said.
Meanwhile, district officials are trying to determine how the school's Web site was tampered with.
Trapp said the Web site will remain down until the district decides it's safe to put it back up.
He planned to send an automated telephone message to parents to let them know what happened.
Trapp said he didn't know what kind of Web site the link connected to because the district shut down the Gulf Middle site before he saw it.
