TAMPA - After being on crutches with a broken foot five months ago, Brandon diver Chris Colwill is in good position to be selected for the U.S. World Cup Team that will compete Feb. 19-24 in Beijing.
Colwill, a senior at the University of Georgia, competed in this week's World Cup selection camp in Columbus, Ohio, in both the 3-meter springboard and in 3-meter synchronized with partner Jevon Tarantino.
Also contested at the meet was 10-meter individual and synchronized 10-meter. The camp featured 32 of the nation's top men's and women's divers fighting for two World Cup spots in the individual events and one berth in the synchronized dives.
Colwill and Tarantino dominated the 3-meter synchronized, winning all four of their lists of dives against two other men's teams. In this event, it appears Colwill and Tarantino have a strong chance of being named to the World Cup meet, where Olympic berths will be at stake in the same venue that will be used for this summer's Beijing Games.
In 3-meter individual, Colwill scored consistently above 7.5 (out of a possible 10) and performed most of his dives at a high degree of difficulty. He also appeared to have the second-highest "projected competition score," a complicated formula that takes into account the dive scores and standards from top international competitions.
Based on this camp and other criteria, a USA Diving selection committee will choose the U.S. World Cup squad.
According to USA Diving communications coordinator Jennifer Lowery, an announcement could be made as early as today.
Colwill broke three metatarsal bones in his right foot last summer. He was warming up for a diving exhibition in Atlanta when he fell off the diving board while "double bouncing," a technique used by divers before competition.
