MIAMI - Marjorie Orr Spurrier, the mother of South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier, has died. She was 86.

Spurrier died of natural causes Thursday in the northeast Florida town of Green Cove Springs, according to a statement from the funeral home.

She was a founding member of Pinewood Presbyterian Church in nearby Middleburg and used to serve as choir director and pianist, according to her family.

Her son, Steve Spurrier, was widely credited for revolutionizing the Southeastern Conference with his innovative, wide-open passing attack and led the Florida Gators to their first national title in 1996.

As a player there in his college years, Steve Spurrier won Florida's first Heisman Trophy in 1966, returned as coach in 1990 and won 122 games in 12 seasons. He then became head coach of the NFL's Washington Redskins and moved to South Carolina in 2005.

Spurrier was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Graham Spurrier. Her survivors include three grown children.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at Pinewood Presbyterian Church.
