Here are some of Candice Olson's favorite design tips.
•Terrified of making a color blunder? Try painting test patches of color on your walls or pinning fabric samples onto your existing furniture. Spending some time with these "tests" will help you decide if you're on the right decorating track.
Maybe you'll discover that a certain color looks fabulous by lamplight but is too overbearing in full afternoon sun. The only way to find out is by experimenting.
•Having trouble seeing the big picture? If you're not sure how your decorating scheme will come together, try creating a sample board with all your fabric swatches, paint chips and wallpaper samples.
Take the board with you during shopping trips or even to a coffee date with friends. A picture really is worth a thousand words.
•Decorating trends come and go, so the trick is to discover your own classic style that will stand the test of time. An easy way to do this is by employing a neutral color scheme for "big ticket" items such as couches, carpets and other furniture.
If you love the latest trendy chartreuse or lime green, introduce it throughout the room in small items that are easily changed: Throw cushions, vases and picture frames are all good choices.
Next year, when lime green is passe, you can introduce accessories in the newest hot color at a minimum of expense.
•When designing large, open spaces, avoid grouping furniture around the outside edges of the room. Instead, divide your floor plan into zones.
For instance, a kitchen-family room could feature an entertainment zone with a sofa, coffee table and easy chair grouped around the TV. Another corner of the room becomes a tranquil reading nook with the addition of a big comfy chair and ottoman. A kitchen desk area becomes the kids' homework zone.
Use plants, decorative screens or other furniture to distinguish one zone from another.
