TAMPA - The first day of wrestling at the Hillsborough County Championships at Wharton went pretty much as expected, with Brandon taking control of the event and leaving a handful of teams to battle for second place.
The Eagles advanced 12 of the 13 wrestlers in competition to today's semifinals, including top-seeded wrestlers Sean Padgett (103 pounds), Terry Dawson (112), Ty Jones (119), Kevin Timothy (135), Joey Cozart (140), Zaq Berridge (160), Phil Uno (215) and Eric Grajales (130), who pinned all three of his opponents to run his season total to 41, a program record.
That helped Brandon hold the first-day lead with 167 points. Durant (139), Alonso (113), Bloomingdale (95) and Newsome (83) rounded out the top five.
Durant advanced nine to the semifinals, including top-seeded wrestlers Christian Reed (125) and Yamil Crespo (145). Meanwhile, Alonso advanced six to the semis, including top-seeded Kurt Ivy (152), giving the Ravens the best shot of overtaking the Cougars for second place.
"It's going to be a dogfight, that's for sure," Alonso coach John Moore said.
Other top-seeded wrestlers to advance to the semis were Middleton's Ricardo Albaladejo (171), Gaither's Aaron Little (189) and Newsome's Connor O'Neil (285).
Bloomingdale junior Chris Figari (140), one of four Bulls to advance to the semis, picked up career win No. 100 in his final match Friday.
Wrestling begins today at 10 a.m. Finals are scheduled for 7 p.m.
