TAMPA - The Tampa Prep boys basketball team hasn't lost a game since falling to Middleton 59-57 in the season opener.
On Friday, against Class 2A-District 9 opponent Calvary Christian, the Terrapins, ranked No. 1 in the 2A state poll, won their 18th consecutive game, 64-55, but it didn't come easy.
Prep led 16-1 after the first quarter and went into halftime ahead, 45-24. In the second half, however, Calvary Christian went on a 23-10 run to close the deficit to 52-42 with 6:36 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Terrapins were able to close out the game at the free-throw line.
Senior forward David Waller and sophomore guard Jamal Cherry scored 14 points each to lead the Terrapins, while senior center Patrick McCarthy added 13 points. Waller also had 11 rebounds, giving him eight double-doubles on the season. Montana Brown led the Warriors with 15 points.
Tampa Prep coach Joe Fenlon told his players to prepare for a different Calvary Christian team in the second half.
"We talked about it," Fenlon said. "Calvary is not a team that makes the Class 1A final four one year and falls apart the next."
Calvary moved up from 1A into Prep's district last summer, and the new district opponent gave reason for caution.
"I hadn't seen them play before," Fenlon said. "If they were great, I didn't want to know and if they weren't, I didn't want to know either."
The Terrapins remained undefeated in the district and clinched the top seed.
