TAMPA - Several area freeze shelters for the homeless and people who live in homes without heat will open tonight in Hillsborough County.
"It's not so much the temperature as the wind chill," said Hillsborough County Community Relations Coordinator Marcia Mejia.
The temperature is expected to drop to 38 degrees tonight, with a wind chill in the low-'30s, she said.
The shelters opening tonight are:
* Salvation Army, 1514 N. Florida Ave., Tampa. This shelter is only for adults.
* Metropolitan Ministries, 2010 N. Florida Ave. This shelter is for families.
* Good Samaritan Mission at Bethune Park, 5809 Edina St., in Wimauma. This shelter is for adults and families.
The Salvation Army and Metropolitan Ministries shelters opened at 4 p.m. The Bethune Park location opened at 6 p.m. They will stay open until 8 a.m. Monday morning, and meals will be provided.
Officials in surrounding counties have not announced shelter openings.
