Villeneuve Ends Long Pact With Manager

MONTREAL - Jacques Villeneuve and longtime manager and friend Craig Pollock have parted ways.

The Journal de Montreal reported Saturday the former Formula One champion from Canada, ready to begin his rookie year in NASCAR's Sprint Cup series, has split with Pollock after 15 years working together.

"Craig has a new wife and he seems to want to concentrate on his new family life, which will be centered in Europe," Villeneuve told the Journal. "For my part, I choose to base myself here in Canada, with my family, in order to pursue my career as a NASCAR driver. It's going well so far with Bill Davis Racing. I want to concentrate on it and do my things here."

The two had been friends since the early 1980s. Pollock, who lives in Monaco, has been Villeneuve's manager since 1992, when the son of former F1 star Gilles Villeneuve was beginning his racing career.

Villeneuve, the 1998 Formula One champion, ran in seven NASCAR Craftsman Truck events and made his Sprint Cup debut last fall at Talladega, finishing 21st.

Herbert's Sons Killed In Accident

CORNELIUS, N.C. - Top Fuel drag racer Doug Herbert's two sons were killed Saturday in a traffic accident near their home.

A statement from Herbert's team said sons Jon, 17, and James, 12, died instantly when the car they were riding in collided with a Hummer in this town 20 miles north of Charlotte.

Police said the Mazda the Herberts were in attempted to pass a third car when it went out of control.
