GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Fred Everson.
The water temperature was 63 degrees in the Gulf on Saturday, and that's warm enough for most local species to bite. Snook like it warmer, but it won't affect trout, redfish or sheepshead.
Captain Danny Guarino reported a slow bite in the Little Manatee River during the week. He said they caught a few short snook and some small trout. Bait is getting harder to find outside the Sunshine Skyway, but it's still there.
Captain Chet Jennings spent some time in Apollo Beach this week, and he caught a lot of silver trout and small jack crevalles on shrimp around the warm outflow at the Big Bend power plant. He later saw some terns working the surface, went to investigate and found a school of large pilchards. After loading the live well, he headed for Cockroach Bay, where he caught a few redfish and some big trout.
I am seeing a lot of sheepshead under the docks, but no jack crevalles or snook. I tried to entice the sheepshead with some frozen shrimp, but they would have none of it.
Captain Billy Jordan caught a couple of grouper while trolling deep-diving plugs south of the Bahia Beach Reef. That was earlier this week, before the weather turned cold and windy again.
