SAFETY HARBOR — A 23-year-old Clearwater man was held today on bail of more than $160,000 after authorities say he broke into more than a dozen cars in a Safety Harbor neighborhood early Saturday.
Jesse Destories, who works for a seashell wholesaler, was arrested on 17 charges, 15 accusing him of breaking into cars, many of them unlocked, in the neighborhood loosely bounded by McMullen-Booth and Enterprise roads, and old Tampa Bay.
Among the stolen items were checkbooks, iPods, GPS systems, credit cards, wallets, students' book bags, cell phones and checkbooks, Pinellas County Jail records state.
Destories came to the attention of authorities at 8:21 a.m. Saturday after he hit a car with his 1996 Jeep while trying to pass another vehicle at Nursery Road and South Haven Drive in Clearwater, jail affidavits state.
The stolen items were found in his vehicle, plus black gloves, a small flashlight and a hunting knife, jail affidavits state.
