RUSKIN - Mike Holovak, a longtime NFL executive who coached the Patriots to their first championship game, died Sunday in Ruskin, a few hours before the team left for the Super Bowl. He was 88.
Holovak died of complications from pneumonia, Boston College spokesman Reid Oslin said after speaking with Holovak's wife, Pauline Scudder Holovak. Holovak was a former football star and coach at Boston College, and is a member of the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame.
The Patriots' second-winningest coach, Holovak led the Boston Patriots to the American Football League title game after the 1963 season. They lost to San Diego, 51-10.
Brady: 'I'll Be Ready' Despite Ankle Injury
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Don't worry, Pats fans. Tom Brady plans to play in the Super Bowl. New England's star quarterback walked up the three short steps to the podium with ease Sunday night, showing no signs of the right ankle injury that had become such a hot topic since he was spotted wearing a protective boot Monday.
"It's feeling good. I'll be ready to go," Brady said with a smile as the Pats met the media for the first time shortly after arriving in Phoenix.
It was the first time Brady acknowledged he was injured in the AFC Championship Game.
"It was in the San Diego game, I think in the third quarter," Brady said.
Since then, Brady hasn't practiced, but said he moved a little bit during the week and "shuffled around."
"I'm not concerned about how it's going to affect my play," he said. "This won't keep me out."
OVERSEAS GAME: According to a report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers will play the New Orleans Saints in London on Oct. 26. The game will most likely take place at Wembley Stadium.
Commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to make the announcement official at his Super Bowl media conference Friday, according to the Union-Tribune.
The Bucs, Chiefs and Seahawks also had been considered for the game.
HOLMES FUNERAL: Steelers great Ernie Holmes was fearsome on the field, but kind, gentle and devout off it, said friends, family and teammates at his funeral Saturday in Jasper, Texas.
PATRIOTS: Nose tackle Vince Wilfork has been fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness during the AFC Championship Game.
REDSKINS: Owner Dan Snyder is scheduled to have another interview with Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks on Tuesday, a person familiar with the selection process told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Redskins have not publicly stated the names of any candidates.
