ST. PETERSBURG - A woman confronted Gov. Charlie Crist over Amendment 1, the property tax savings plan, as he was campaigning for the proposal on Monday.
Identifying herself as Michelle Buck, she told the governor, "I believe it's not going to do anything to help me save my home."
Crist seemed surprised by Buck's comment and advised her to vote her conscience.
Amendment 1 essentially doubles the homestead exemption for primary homeowners to $50,000, makes the Save Our Homes tax protection portable for homeowners who want to move to a new primary residence, creates a $25,000 tax break on tangible personal property for businesses, and puts a 10 percent cap on annual rises in assessments for second homes and business property.
Critics say it doesn't go far enough to help homeowners facing rising property assessments or to equalize property taxes between new and longtime homeowners.
