Hillsborough Deputy In Crash; Other Driver Ticketed

A Hillsborough County deputy was involved in a traffic crash Tuesday in which the driver of the other vehicle was at fault, authorities said.
Investigators said Robert Gardner, 53, of Davenport, was driving west on Hillsborough Avenue in a 2006 Ford Mustang and turned left to go south on Orient Road when he entered the path of an oncoming patrol car driven by Deputy Jimmie Hicks.
Hicks, 55, was driving east in a marked patrol car in the inside lane of Hillsborough Avenue. Officials said he swerved to avoid the Mustang but it struck the driver's side of the patrol car.
The deputy was taken to University Community Hospital and treated but not admitted.
Gardner was not hurt, the sheriff's office said. His passenger, Jesus Millan, 27, complained of a knee injury and later was treated at Tampa General Hospital but not admitted.
Gardner was issued a violation-of-right-of-way ticket, according to the sheriff's office.
