Zephyrhills skateboarders who don't like to follow the rules need to be taught a lesson, and a proposed ordinance that targets their wallets just might do it.
Council members were absolutely correct to give preliminary approval Monday to an ordinance that would impose fines ranging from $75 to $500 against those who skate downtown and in other prohibited areas.
A crackdown is a must. The downtown area is not a skateboard park; it is a place of commerce where people should be able to walk unobstructed.
Residents who go downtown to shop or conduct other business should not be subjected to skateboarders practicing their moves. Nor should business owners have to put up with dangerous, annoying and destructive behavior that deters people from patronizing their stores. And city property must be protected.
In addition, taxpayers should not be exposed to liability issues that could easily be cured by an all-out crackdown - with tough penalties - on skateboarding downtown.
The youths who don't want to play by the rules obviously need reminding that, nearly four years ago, the city was gracious to create a 12,000-square-foot skate area, with obstacles to maneuver and jump, at a cost of $85,000 at Krusen Park.
City officials didn't have to be so gracious. They were acting out of the goodness of their hearts, trying to provide another recreational opportunity for youths. They were not implementing a voter-approved mandate.
And the main rule was simple and fair: Wear a helmet. It's for skaters' safety and a requirement of the city's insurance.
Yet, some skateboarders decided to ignore the rules and regulations by refusing to wear helmets and taking their play downtown. It's a shame that their parents haven't instilled in them more respect for authority and the need for rules, which everyone must live by unless you're in a position to create your own society.
Unruly and uncooperative skateboarders have invited this ordinance on themselves. The city council, which has tried several times to work with them, should approve it without hesitation next month - and enforce it vigorously.
