Pasco Letters To The Editor

Shocked But Not Awed

Recently, Tampa Tribune articles would make us readers wonder why so many of our elected officials compete for the Pasco County "DUH" award since, in doing so, they bring ridicule upon themselves and their office in full view of us tax-paying serfs.

The hands-down winner of the "DUH" award goes to Zephyrhills City Council members. This stalwart body has, for some time, actually been negotiating with a gang of local skateboarders, attempting to reach a compromise.

These juvenile delinquents seem to believe that it is their unalienable right to misuse a city park and vandalize the property therein - while at the same time refusing to use an existing skateboard facility built at taxpayer expense because "there's no shade, and it gets too hot!"

The runner-up "DUH" award goes to Heather Fiorentino, school superintendent, who abused her influential position and computer system to blatantly campaign against a highly political tax amendment issue, calling it a misunderstanding and much ado about nothing.

As is standard operating procedure in these situations, a member of her staff offered a feeble cover story and accepted blame for the "misunderstanding."

Honorable mention goes to the Pasco County Commission, specifically Commissioners Ann Hildebrand and Michael Cox. Unless provided with show-and-tell photographs, they could not distinguish between a motorcycle, a four-door automobile and a trailer during Sheriff "Bubba" White's newest budget shell game, the old "I'll-trade-you-five-old-cars-for-nine-new-motorcycles" one!

We taxpayers should not be in awe at the caliber of Pasco County's elected officials.

Sheriff Should Quit

A few months ago, when Sheriff Bob White went before the Pasco County Commission, he said he was in dire need of deputy sheriffs to protect us citizens of Pasco County.

At that time, when all the rhetoric was settled, the commission set money aside for the sheriff to have 10 new deputy positions.

But when the governor and others came out endorsing Amendment 1, White supported it, too. And he is voting against hiring his own deputies?

I could not help but remember that old television show "What's My Line?" Four people came in front of a panel, and all claimed to be one person - but they were not.

As far as White is concerned, I do not want to his political rhetoric any longer. I will vote for anyone who runs for sheriff except him.

In other words, Bob White, please step down! You embarrass us honest folks of Pasco County.

Mandatory Recycling

Regarding "Recycling Must Become Way Of Life," Jan. 23:

Your editorial is right on the mark. I lived in New Jersey, Virginia and California before coming to Florida. We had mandatory recycling in all those places for many years.

It's past the time for our county commissioners to make recycling mandatory in Pasco and enforce it with heavy fines against those who do not comply. And we need an easy way to dispose of toxic materials such as TVs, computers, paints and other things that do not belong in the landfill.
