TAMPA - A 46-year-old man was hospitalized after he slipped off a roof and fell onto a metal fence post, impaling himself.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. at 3101 E Mcberry Street.

When rescuers arrived, they saw a house with a 3-foot chain-link fence and what appeared to be a man straddling the fence. At first they didn't realize the man was impaled, said Capt. Bill Wade, Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman. A metal fence post penetrated his hip and pelvis about 6 to 8 inches, Wade said.

The man was putting sealant on the metal roof when he lost his balance and fell, according to Wade.

While paramedics worked to help the man stay upright and keep the weight off the injured area, other rescuers carefully cut away the fence and then cut the post. The rescue took about 20 minutes, Wade said.

After the post and man's leg were stabilized, he was flown to Tampa General Hospital.

The man, whose name was not immediately available, was transported in serious condition.
