Regarding "Florida Voters Take Advantage Of Their Moment In The Sun" (Our Opinion, Jan. 30):
Charlie Crist and company got their wish with the shortsighted approval of the tax amendment. One has to wonder if Crist only needs to be shortsighted because his sights are set on a VP spot in Washington.
The Trib summed it up famously in just one sentence: "But now that homesteaded property owners have been given all the breaks they have a right to expect, additional changes will be very difficult to pass." Amen to that.
I stand to gain around $240 in property tax reduction. And since our combined household income is far below the salary of a Hillsborough County fireman, you would think I would have voted for the amendment. But I did not. I thought the majority of Floridians cared more about the long-term than a quick buck today. Instead, they took away the biggest leverage we had against our state and local politicians to really fix the problem.
