The state today debuts the SunPass Mini, a credit-card-sized transponder that sticks to windshields.
At $4.99, the stickers never need batteries and cost less than the regular transponders, which retail for $24.99. To sweeten the deal, the state is offering $4.99 worth of tolls with each Mini purchase.
So why hang on to your old SunPass? The Mini has a few drawbacks: It doesn't beep or light up at toll booths and can't be used in another vehicle once stuck to the windshield. Still, turnpike officials expect the Mini to appeal to folks who refuse to shell out $25 for a regular transponder and to existing customers who don't want to worry about changing batteries.
SunPass customers should update their accounts before switching to a Mini. Call 1-888-865-5352. The sticker is on sale at many toll booths, as well as at Publix and CVS stores.
