Regarding "Jury Finds For Family In Baby's '03 Death" (front page, June 28):
While deeply saddened by such a tragedy as a death, especially that of an infant, I feel I must beg the public to please consider the consequences of such lawsuits.
We continually hear, especially during an election year, of the number of Americans without health insurance and worse, the inability to pay for health care. We "demand" our politicians create "reform." The public demands lower medical fees and more affordable coverage. How is that going to be possible when juries and judges continue to award such astronomical amounts of money for "pain and suffering" - $12 million in this particular case? Who do we think pays these awards ultimately? Do we really think the insurance companies are paying that dollar amount?
Part of life is death. Unfortunately, infants are very fragile. Necrotizing enterocolitis, although not common, happens. Low birth weights, poor prenatal care all can contribute to predisposing babies to this condition as well as "it just happens."
