Group Seeks To Fill Troops' Shoeboxes

NEW PORT RICHEY - NEW PORT RICHEY - When soldiers are thousands of miles away from their families, they appreciate getting a little something from home through Operation Shoebox.

For the fourth year, the Community Service Council of West Pasco is heading up a local effort to ship boxes overseas to troops, said Linda Clements, council president.

"The most important item being a letter or card of thanks in each and every box," she wrote about the program.

"Last year we sent out 5,024 packages to our servicemen and women," Clements said.

"To our military heroes, we're proud of you," a flier reads. "Our mission is to supply service men and women with a shoe box full of love."

People can donate cash and checks to help the council pay for postage. Donors also can drop off goods at more than a dozen area locations.

Items needed include heat-resistant candy, mouthwash, toothbrushes, toothpaste, instant coffee, powdered drink mixes, beef jerky, canned fruit, small boxes of cereal, canned tuna, canned ham, eyedrops, foot powder, brushes, hand lotion, disposable razors, shampoos, bar soap, sunscreen, plastic utensils, batteries, white cushioned socks, dark sunglasses and small board games.
