TAMPA - On Monday night, during one of the most important home series in Tampa Bay Rays history, some fans tried to enter the stadium with counterfeit tickets, the team has confirmed.

The fans did not buy tickets through an authorized ticket outlet.

It wasn't the first time counterfeit tickets have been sold for a game at Tropicana Field, team spokesman Rick Vaughn said.

"But obviously with the season that's going on now, there's a greater chance of that to happen," he said.

Vaughn cautioned fans to buy tickets through the team's box office, Web site or through ticketmaster.com.

"Anywhere else, you run the risk of purchasing tickets that are not legitimate," he said.

The Rays (51-32) have the best record in Major League Baseball. They beat Boston 5-4 on Monday and 3-1 on Tuesday, and they will complete their three-game series against the Red Sox tonight.

Tonight's game is sold out except for a limited number of obstructed-view seats, the Rays said today in a news release.

A St. Petersburg Police Department spokesman said he was not aware of any calls for service from people regarding counterfeit tickets to Monday's game but that even if the department did field calls, it simply would tell people to contact federal law enforcement.
