ATLANTA - ATLANTA - Brett Myers, leading the major leagues with 24 home runs allowed and coming off the shortest start of his career with the Phillies, is headed to the minor leagues.
Myers agreed to be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday.
Myers, 3-9 after giving up five runs in two-plus innings in Friday night's 8-7 loss at Texas, has a 5.84 ERA, sixth worst in the majors among qualifying pitchers.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he spoke with Myers on Monday about accepting the assignment to work on his delivery. Myers, who has more than five years experience in the majors, had the right to decline the assignment and asked for a day to consider the move.
Union Files Grievance On Chacon's Release
NEW YORK - The players' association filed a grievance over the release of pitcher Shawn Chacon, saying the team's decision to terminate his contract was without just cause.
Chacon cleared waivers and was released Monday, five days after a physical altercation with Houston Astros general manager Ed Wade in the clubhouse.
Chacon had a $2 million salary this year, and the decision to terminate the contract meant $983,607 won't be paid. He also lost the chance to make up to $1 million in performance bonuses based on innings.
The union alleged Chacon was disciplined without just cause under the collective bargaining agreement and terminated without just cause.
DIAMONDBACKS: Left fielder Eric Byrnes was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.
The move comes eight days after Byrnes came off the DL, where he spent a month with injuries to both hamstrings.
Byrnes hurt his hamstring as he tried to steal third in the second inning of Arizona's 6-3 victory on Monday night.
