ST. PETERSBURG - A tractor-trailer jackknifed on I-275 this morning when its driver tried to avoid a sport utility vehicle that had spun out of control, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
When the truck driver, Carlos Sanchez, 71, braked to avoid colliding with the Ford Expedition, his 1992 Mack truck swerved and jackknifed in the median north of Fifth Avenue North, according to the patrol and St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue. Some diesel fuel spilled from its fuel tanks.
Neither Sanchez, of Tampa, nor Ana Abraham, 34, of Sarasota, who was driving the Expedition, was injured, according to authorities. A teenage passenger in the Expedition also was not injured. No charges were filed.
As for the Expedition, Abraham lost control of it about 11:12 a.m. as she was trying to change lanes, the patrol said. The Expedition spun and then hit one, and then another, guardrail, the patrol said.
