TAMPA – The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded defensemen Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Matt Carle, former 2006 first-round pick Ty Wishart along with a first-round pick in the 2009 draft and a fourth-round pick in the 2010 draft.
Boyle, a key member of the team's 2004 Stanley Cup championship team, had to waive his no-trade clause in order for the trade to go through.
In 523 career games Boyle has scored 76 goals and added 216 assists. He finished last season with four goals and 25 points in 37 games after missing 45 games following two surgeries to repair torn tendons in his left wrist. Boyle suffered the injury following a preseason game on Sept. 19 when a skate fell from an overhead hook and landed on his wrist.
Boyle signed a six-year contract extension worth $40 million in February that begins in October and had expressed on Thursday he had no intention of waiving his no-trade clause in order to be moved. But after thinking about the situation overnight, Boyle informed the Lightning on Friday that he would not stand in the way of a trade to San Jose.
"Dan is very passionate about being a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning and that's something that I will always respect about Dan," Lightning owner Oren Koules said.
In picking up Carle, 23, Tampa Bay adds a young offensive defenseman who had 11 goals and 42 points in his rookie year in 2006-07 and was a member of the All-Rookie team. He slipped to two goals and 15 points last season as he battled through injury. He signed a four-year contract extension worth $13.75 million that begins this season.
Wishart, a former No. 16 overall pick in 2006, had 16 goals and 62 points between Prince George and Moose Jaw of the Western Hockey League last season. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound defenseman is expected to sign an entry level contract and start the season with Tampa Bay's minor league affiliate in Norfolk, Va.
With the draft picks acquired, Tampa Bay now has two first round selections and two second round picks in the 2009 draft.
"We feel that we have set this team up for the present and for the future," Koules said.
