TAMPA - Lightning caused a fire that heavily damaged two apartments in South Tampa this evening, officials said.
No one was injured during the fire at The Pavilions at Ballast Point Apartments, 6306 S. MacDill Ave., Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade said in a news release.
Lightning may have caused the blaze, Wade said.
The first crews to arrive at the apartments reported flames on the roof.
More than 30 firefighters responded to the scene about 7:30 p.m. The fire was under control in about 45 minutes, but the apartment's metal roof made it difficult for crews to douse the flames, Wade said.
Damage is about $150,000. Two upstairs apartments are heavily damaged. One is vacant and the tenant of the other was not at home. Two apartments downstairs had water damage, Wade said.
Eight apartments are without power until Monday morning, Wade said. Displaced residents of the 16-unit building have found temporary shelter elsewhere, Wade said.
