SHADY HILLS - SHADY HILLS - Don't forget to pack compassion in that hurricane survival kit, American Red Cross officials say.
Potential volunteers can learn how to change lives at a training workshop Saturday, according to spokeswomen Abi Weaver and Melanie Koch.
"Now is your opportunity to be someone else's hero," Weaver said in a statement.
The workshop will introduce new volunteers to shelter operations.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Safety Town, seasoned Red Cross disaster workers will lead participants through exercises that simulate opening, operating and closing evacuation shelters. Safety Town is on State Road 52, just west of the Suncoast Parkway and about eight miles east of U.S. 19.
At the end of the workshop, novice volunteers will be assigned to staff the various evacuation shelters.
Red Cross leaders are looking for individuals, families, civic groups and faith-based organizations interested in helping.
Registration is required. All volunteers must agree to a criminal background and reference check.
Multilingual volunteers are especially needed.
