TAMPA - TAMPA - University of South Florida defensive coordinator Wally Burnham received a $55,000 raise, the biggest chunk from the additional $300,000 assistants pool allocated for Coach Jim Leavitt's nine full-time assistants as part of Leavitt's new contract he signed in March.
Burnham's new salary, which went into effect Tuesday, is $220,000. Offensive coordinator Greg Gregory also received a sizable increase from $120,000 to $160,000.
In the past three years, all of USF's assistants were among the lowest paid in the BCS in their respective positions, including five assistants last season who ranked last. Leavitt's new deal, which he signed in March, pays him $1.5 million and increased the assistants pool by $300,000.
The remainder of the 2008-09 salaries for USF's full-time assistants with last year's figures in parentheses: Carl Franks, running backs $150,000 ($120,000); Mike Canales, wide receivers $150,000 ($100,000); Troy Douglas, secondary $130,000 ($95,000); Mike Simmonds, offensive line $100,000 ($65,000) and Larry Scott, tight ends $90,000 ($50,000).
Defensive line coach John Hendrick will earn $120,000 and defensive ends coach Kevin Patrick $70,000. Neither Hendrick nor Patrick were on last year's staff.
