LARGO - A woman talking on a cell phone rammed her sport utility vehicle into the rear of a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus this afternoon that had stopped to pick up and let off passengers, a PSTA spokesman said.
The westbound bus had stopped near the Starkey Road intersection when it was struck at about 1:30 p.m., PSTA spokesman Bob Lasher said.
The woman driving the SUV was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center with injuries that weren't life-threatening, he said. She was taken as a precaution because firefighters had extricated her from the wreck, Largo police Sgt. Mike Loux said.
One of the eight passengers on the bus was taken to a local hospital after complaining of neck and back pain, and two other passengers were treated at the scene, Lasher said.
Loux said the woman at the wheel of the Ford Explorer wasn't paying attention, and, at the last second, swerved to avoid the bus. That's when the left passenger side of the SUV rammed into the back of the bus, he said.
The crash is under investigation and no charges have been filed, he said.
