Granddaughter Alerts Palm Harbor Family That Escapes Fire

The noise Courtney Smith heard coming from her grandparents' Palm Harbor garage about 1 a.m. today sent her running to the adults.

She thought it was a burglar.

"Somebody's trying to break into the house. There's all sorts of noises coming from the garage," Linda Smith said, recalling what her granddaughter told them.

When Larry Smith went to check, he learned that the noises were explosions from a fire in the garage.

The family – and a puppy -- got out of the home at 3448 Sutherland Drive and called 911.

Firefighters were on scene for several hours.

The house was severely damaged, and investigators were trying to determine the cause.

No further details were immediately available.
