LARGO - LARGO - A woman talking on a cell phone Monday rammed her sport utility vehicle into the rear of a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus stopped to pick up and let off passengers, a PSTA spokesman said.
The bus was stopped near the Starkey and Ulmerton roads intersection when it was hit about 1:30 p.m., PSTA spokesman Bob Lasher said. The SUV driver and a bus passenger were hospitalized. Two passengers were treated for minor injuries, he said.
The SUV driver was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center with injuries that weren't life-threatening, he said. She was taken as a precaution because firefighters extricated her from the wreck, Largo police Sgt. Mike Loux said.
One of eight passengers on the bus was taken to a local hospital after complaining of neck and back pain. Two others were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Lasher said.
Loux said the driver swerved to avoid the bus, but the SUV hit the back of the bus, he said.
The crash is under investigation. No charges have been filed, he said.
