Wednesday, some lucky folks won't have to sweat summer's high gas prices.
The Florida Lottery, tapping into consumers' gas pump angst, is offering free gas for life. All you need is luck.
For the next two months, in a game called Summer Cash, the lottery will award its five weekly second-place winners with gas cards for as long they are alive, and its 50 third-place winners with gas for a year. First place? That's just a quarter million in cash.
Wednesday's drawing, a first for the lottery, comes as the average for a gallon of unleaded tops $4.06 statewide. It's $3.99 in the Tampa-St. Petersburg market.
"We're always trying to look for appealing prizes, and there's been a lot of buzz about gas prices," Florida Lottery spokeswoman Jackie Barreiros said.
In recent months, a handful of other state lotteries have awarded gas cards.
"It's a sign of the times," said Linda Hamlin, spokeswoman for the New Mexico Lottery, which awarded 100 gas cards a couple of weeks ago.
Summer Cash tickets went on sale June 30 and about 221,000 players have bought tickets since.
