WESLEY CHAPEL - Cobb Theatres has secured approval to sell beer, wine and liquor at a movie theater complex under construction at The Grove at Wesley Chapel, despite concerns from a nearby church congregation.
The Pasco County commission, at its regular meeting Tuesday in Dade City, unanimously approved a conditional-use permit and waiver of a "specific distance" rule that prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages within 1,000 feet of a church or school. The sale of alcohol will be limited to a theater for adults-only and restaurant on the mezzanine level of the complex northwest of State Road 54 and Interstate 75.
Members of Faith Baptist Church, which sits 827 feet away from the theater - as the crow flies - opposed the waiver and permit, saying they are concerned that intoxicated movie patrons will drive by their church and school, putting children and other congregants in danger.
An entourage of attorneys and consultants representing Cobb argued the theater is "buffered" from the church by a thick line of trees and an apartment complex. Hudson-based planning consultant King Helie noted that the 1,000-foot rule was adopted 29 years ago, when Wesley Chapel was a much more rural place.
Commissioners agreed saying the theater will be an asset to growing Wesley Chapel and provide jobs for high school students in the area.
