LAND O' LAKES - After what seemed like months of banging his head against a wall, Wesley Chapel coach John Castelamare can relax now.
Three of his former players will have their names featured on a college roster when the fall arrives.
Former quarterback Greg Jenkins, who was set go to a junior college in California, will play for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, the 2007 NJCAA national co-champions; offensive lineman Charles VanZandt is headed to Division II Minnesota Crookston; and wide receiver Trevor DeGroot will play at Webber International in Babson Park.
"This was the hardest I've ever had in all the years, getting these kids in school," Castelamare said. "Something was happening and then it fell through or they were No. 2 on the list and they wouldn't want them."
The trio join Wesley Chapel lineman Kamran Joyer, who will be a senior next season, in verbally committing to play college football. Last month, Joyer gave a verbal commitment to the University of South Florida one day after a visit to the University of Miami.
Jenkins already has made his way to the Perkinston, Miss., campus and is enrolled in classes. Of the three Wildcats, Jenkins may have an inside track at a starting position. The quarterback who led MGCCC to the national championship game last season, Genario McNealy, transferred to the University of Northern Alabama, while his backup, Jared Foster, is no longer on the team.
Despite missing one game with a shoulder contusion last season with Wesley Chapel, Jenkins completed 55 of 98 passes for 927 yards and eight touchdowns as well as 382 yards and six more scores on the ground.
