A Conversation With Ben Troupe

Published: July 8, 2008

Bucs coach Jon Gruden favors two-tight end formations, and with the offseason addition of four-year veteran Ben Troupe, he has another weapon at his disposal.

Known for his sure hands, Troupe was one of two tight ends brought in this offseason, joining John Gilmore. Alex Smith and Jerramy Stevens return from last season's squad that won the NFC South title.

What's the difference between playing in Tennessee and here in Tampa Bay?

The atmosphere, the players, and the level of focus and intensity. I mean, take nothing away from Tennessee. I thank God I was with them for four years. But it's the level of intensity down here. The biggest thing is, you can't tell who's old and who's new. Everyone jells with one another, we know that we are going to need everybody.

There are a few other tight ends on the team. How competitive is it fighting for the top spot?

It's real competitive. I mean, you obviously want a team that has a lot of competition at each position. They want to bring the best out of you. We actually have six guys, in my mind, which could start on any team. You want someone that's pushing you every day and that's definitely what we have at the tight end position.

After attending the University of Florida, are you happy to be back playing in the state?

It feels great to get back in the state. These fans, honestly, are great down here in Tampa. Also the atmosphere, I keep stressing it, but it's true. The people and the coaching staff down here are great. It's going to be a lovely situation because they are obviously depending on me since they were NFC South champs last year. It's lovely to be about an hour away from my old stomping grounds.

What's your favorite part of the game?

The game itself. Nothing compares to the game on Sunday. I call it my escape from reality because for those three hours, I don't have anything but the game. I can just lose myself in it. So I definitely embrace that.

What players did you watch growing up?

Walter Payton, Jerry Rice and all the greats. I also watched Bruce Smith. I was just a fan of the game and I enjoyed watching it.

Any pregame rituals?

Prayer. I just pray before, after and during the game. Prayer definitely changes things and I do as much praying as I can because I definitely need God on my side each and every day.
