TAMPA - A bumbling thief trying to steal copper from a vacant house on Golfwood Boulevard caused a gas explosion that seriously damaged the house this afternoon.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said the explosion caused serious structural damage through the house at 4502 Golfwood Blvd. The fire department had no estimate of damages. There were no injuries.
A fire investigator determined that someone trying to take copper from the hot water heater and air conditioner left the line from a liquid petroleum gas tank open. The gas leaked into the house.
