DADE CITY - Emergency crews are working to contain oil spilling from an overturned tanker truck in a rural area outside Dade City.
The truck is stretched across both lanes of Prospect Road between Handcart Road and Clinton Avenue. Traffic coming from the west is being redirected onto Handcart Road, while traffic coming from the other direction is being turned around. Affected parts of Prospect Road are expected to be closed for another four to six hours, according to emergency workers.
The truck, which was hauling a 900-gallon tank with spent oil, flipped shortly before 6 p.m., according to Pasco Fire Rescue.
Firefighters are allowing the oil, which is leaking from the top of the tanker, to drain into a nearby culvert but are trying to keep it from going into the sewer system.
Emergency management officials have been notified of the spill. Representatives from the company that owns the truck, Synergy Recycling, have called for a 75-ton rotator tow truck to lift the tanker off the road.
