A Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy responding to a report of a stolen car was injured Thursday night when he crashed into the car he was looking for, according to the sheriff's office.
At 6:53 p.m. deputies responded to a report of a stolen vehicle near Brown's Country Corner, 2501 Medulla Rd. in Plant City, according to Cpl. Terri Smith of the sheriff's office.
The truck's owner, Richard Kearns, 34, of Plant City said he got out of his 2001 Dodge pickup and tossed his keys on the floorboard. Several juveniles who saw him toss the keys jumped into the truck as he entered the store, then drove off.
Shortly after responding, deputies spotted the truck and began to follow it.
As the deputies attempted to pull the vehicle over, the suspects began to flee, according to Smith.
Deputies then followed the truck westbound on Sparkman Road near Plant City.
The truck began to turn south on Jap Tucker Road and hit the car of supervisor Sgt. George Moser head on, Smith said. The four suspects then climbed out of the car and ran away from the scene, but they were quickly taken into custody, Smith said. Moser was able to get out of his car and help apprehend the suspects, who range in age from 15 to 17, according to the sheriff's office.
Moser was taken to a Lakeland Regional Hospital in fair condition, according to Smith.
