OCALA - Marion County Animal Center has closed after an outbreak of diseases contaminated the facility. They expect to euthanize about 80 dogs.
Christy Jergens, animal program coordinator, said the shelter has recently received a large number of strays and unvaccinated animals that may have carried the diseases, which include distemper and parvo. Many of the diseases are incurable.
Because the illnesses are airborne, they could travel from the quarantine wing of the center to the adoption wing.
Jergens said Wednesday they plan to disinfect the entire facility. Animal redemptions, adoptions and drop-offs have stopped temporarily.
