DAVENPORT, IOWA- Police have arrested a Florida woman they say followed her ex-husband across the country and then stabbed him repeatedly at an Iowa mall.
Debi Joy Droguett of Sarasota was charged Thursday with first-degree murder and willful injury in the death of her 52-year-old ex-husband, Mauricio Droguett.
Police say he was walking into the NorthPark Mall around 7:30 a.m. Thursday when he was stabbed multiple times. One of his co-workers reportedly subdued the attacker until police arrived. The co-worker suffered minor injuries.
Police say Mauricio Droguett worked for a traveling circus-type entertainment group.
A childhood friend, Harry Dubsky, says the couple had an off-and-on relationship, were divorced and have an adult daughter.
Dubsky, the circus marketing manager, grew up with Mauricio Droguett in Sarasota, and says that his ex-wife followed the show as it moved across the western United States.
Droguett was an accountant for the show.
Capt. David Struckman told the Quad City Times that he had gotten restraining orders out against his ex-wife in three states.
She recently moved to Myrtle Beach, Dubsky said, but was stalking her ex-husband for the last 10 days.
"I think she just lost her mind," Dubsky said.
