TAMPA - A former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and a decorated veteran of the war in Iraq are among the new Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies to be sworn in at 2 p.m. today.
The law enforcement academy class started with 29 recruits. By the end of training, only 17 will be sworn in, sheriff's officials say in a written statement.
Graduates include Douglas "Shaw" Duvall, an Army specialist and MP. He earned a Purple Heart when an explosive device hit his vehicle, killing the driver.
Also to be sworn in is Jason Odom, a former Bucs and University of Florida offensive lineman. Odom, a Bartow High School graduate, was a fourth-round draft pick for the Bucs in 1996 and retired in 2001 because of a degenerative back condition. Back surgery in 1999 ended his playing days.
