ST. PETERSBURG - The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Venturous returned to their homeport of St Petersburg this morning. They had been patrolling the waters of the Florida Straits for the past 30 days.
During their patrol, the 77-member crew worked to disrupt illegal alien migration and narcotics smuggling. They provided humanitarian care for 103 Cuban migrants interdicted by several Coast Guard assets and detained and transferred eight migrant smugglers to law enforcement officials.
They were greeted at the dock by several family members.
Sheri Dixon waited with her son Jonathan.
"I'm here to meet my husband. He's the XO (executive officer) on board," Dixon said. We are pretty excited he'll be home and not have to leave the little one.
