GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Billy Nobles, left, with "Reel Animals" partner Mike Anderson.
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the solid mangrove snapper bite, and I had one of our readers call to book a trip.
I told Steve we could run offshore or we could stay inshore, where the fish would not be as large. He decided he wanted to stay inshore, and he was bringing three children.
I picked up Steve and his sons, Cameron, Steve, and John in Apollo Beach at 7 on Wednesday morning. The boys made short work of catching a limit of snapper, and they also hooked a few jacks.
Big Steve even caught a small grouper, and John caught a goliath grouper. Watching this father enjoying the time with his sons reminded me of when I was a kid and my dad would take me fishing.
Steve is in real estate, and we all know what the economy is like, but he said sometimes you have to say "The heck with it. I'm taking my boys fishing."
The snapper bite is in full swing on and offshore.
Tarpon are still here in good numbers. My friend William Woodruff took his wife Liz out for a few hours, jumping five and landing four, with Liz landing three of them.
There are also plenty of juveniles in the 10- to 20-pound range to be had.
Spanish mackerel and sharks are abundant along the ship channel. Just look for the big schools of bait.
