ST. PETERSBURG - Rescue workers pulled an 87-year-old Madeira Beach man from his submerged car this afternoon after he crashed into the water.
Robert Taylor of 4750 Cove Circle, No. 502, died later at St. Petersburg General Hospital, according to a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office report.
Witnesses at the condominium complex at 4600 Duhme Road where the crash occurred said Taylor was in an area where residents vacuum their cars around 11:38 a.m. when they saw him accelerate over a parking curb.
Taylor's car raced through bushes and overturned into the waterway where boats are docked, the witnesses said someone jumped into the water and tried unsuccessfully to break one of the car's windows.
Members of the sheriff's office marine unit and dive team, Madeira Beach Fire and Rescue and other investigators helped pull Taylor and his car from the water.
Deputies are continuing their investigation.
