MIAMI - The founder of Japanese steakhouse Benihana, Rocky Aoki, has died after complications from cancer. He was 69.
Company spokeswoman Nancy Bauer said Aoki died Thursday night in New York from pneumonia.
Aoki, whose Benihana empire includes 90 restaurants worldwide, opened the first in 1964 in New York. The family-style restaurant, where chefs perform tricks while cooking at the table, pairs entertainment with dining.
Friends say Aoki was also a well-known sportsman, environmentalist and author.
