TAMPA - A former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and a decorated veteran of the war in Iraq are among the new Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies who were sworn in Friday.
The law enforcement academy class started with 29 recruits. By the end of training, only 17 remained to be sworn in, sheriff's officials said in a statement.
Graduates include Douglas "Shaw" Duvall, an Army specialist and military policeman. He was awarded a Purple Heart after an explosive device hit his vehicle, killing the driver.
Also sworn in was Jason Odom, a Bartow High School and University of Florida graduate, who was a fourth-round draft pick for the Bucs in 1996 and retired in 2001 because of a degenerative back condition. Back surgery in 1999 ended his playing days.
