SARASOTA - A driver tried to run over two police officers and briefly escaped before crashing during a pursuit and being ejected from his vehicle on Sunday.
The unidentified male suspect was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center with serious injuries, according to the Sarasota Police Department. His condition is not known at this time.
The chase began when two Sarasota officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the 1400 block of 18th Street, according to police. The driver of the vehicle attempted to hit the officers and then sped away. The officers gave chase but briefly lost sight of the vehicle when it entered the Sarasota/Bradenton Airport, according to the department.
The suspect's vehicle was spotted again northbound on U.S. 41 and the pursuit continued until the suspect lost control of his vehicle near U.S. 41 and 68th Street, according to police. His vehicle slid sideways off of the road and struck a utility pole.
No officers were injured in the pursuit.
The Manatee County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash. The Sarasota Police Department will conduct an internal review of the pursuit.
