BOSTON - David Ortiz, on the disabled list since May 31 with a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, is expected to return to Boston's lineup on July 25 for the opener of a series against the New York Yankees.

"I feel good," the Red Sox designated hitter said after hitting off a pitching machine on Saturday. "I was acting like I normally do: locating, check swing, swing and a miss - stuff like that. Everything was fine. That's all I need. Make sure there's no pain when I'm doing that."
Manager Terry Francona said Ortiz looked good during batting practice Friday with the pitching machine set at high speed, prompting the team to schedule a six-game rehabilitation stint in the minor leagues. Ortiz will start three games at Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday, followed by three games in Double-A.

Meanwhile, Boston placed shortstop Julio Lugo on the 15-day disabled list because of a severely strained left quadriceps.

Francona said an MRI showed the injury could keep Lugo out for a month to six weeks.

CUBS: Kerry Wood expects to sit out the All-Star Game because of a blister on his pitching hand.

Wood still plans to attend All-Star festivities on Tuesday night. It was unclear whether he'll be replaced on the NL roster because the commissioner's office, as of Saturday night, had not been officially notified of Wood's injury.

REDS: The team is expected to place right-hander Aaron Harang on the 15-day disabled list today because of a strained right forearm.

The Reds will recall top prospect Homer Bailey from Triple-A Louisville to start against the Brewers.

WHITE SOX: Closer Bobby Jenks got through a bullpen session Saturday without any problems and should be ready to pitch after the All-Star break.

Jenks has been on the disabled list with bursitis near his left (non-pitching) shoulder. He was placed on the DL on July 9, retroactive to June 30.
