Regarding "Elderly Clearwater Woman Not Guilty In French Fry Case" (Metro, July 11):
It never fails to amaze me that there is such a disconnect between common sense and the law. Clearly, Jean Merola - aka "French-fry Granny" - was wrong when she blocked the McDonald's drive-thru lane while she waited for her special order of no-salt fries. Although she was found "not guilty" of willfully blocking the drive-thru, she did block the drive-thru thru for a minimum of 20 minutes. The key word in this case is "willfully."
Did she willfully trap drivers behind her in line? Did she willfully waste at least 20 minutes of their lives? What were the real consequences of her selfish, inconsiderate act?
Here are some suggestions to prevent this from happening again: All fast-food restaurants should ban special order requests in the drive-thru. If you have time to wait for your special order, you should not force others to wait with you.
